Ayres, the Colonial Surgeon, has again repeated to me his opinion that he has often expressed that the work of the Civil Hospital and of the Lock and Small-pox Hospitals (in which there is little to do, and that only in the cold weather) as well as its post mortem examinations and medico-legal work, can easily be performed by two Surgeons provided that they are in good health, and that they work harmoniously together. The Government would then not have to lay down rules conceived with the view of separating as much as possible, the duties of the one from the other in order to prevent incessant quarrels.
